About the Interbase JDBC driver

A JDBC driver is a Java .jar library that lets applications connect to Interbase. DbSchema uses JDBC to reverse engineer schemas, run SQL, and generate documentation. Driver files are usually published by the database vendor or an open-source project.

Host, port, database name, and SSL options are passed in a URL starting with jdbc:. Each Interbase driver uses its own syntax — see the connection details below.

The Interbase JDBC driver

InterBase is a high-performance SQL database known for its small footprint, on-disk encryption, and multi-generational architecture (MGA), which provides snapshot isolation without table locks. It is widely used in embedded applications and Delphi/C++ Builder environments.

The driver archive is a zip file. Extract it and load the .jar files using DbSchema's Driver Manager.

Connecting to InterBase

As with Firebird, which shares its ancestry, the database in the URL is a path on the server rather than on your machine. That single fact accounts for most failed connections.

1. Give the server's own path to the file. jdbc:interbase://host//opt/data/mydb.ib on Unix, or a drive path such as C:\data\mydb.ib on Windows. The file has to be visible to the InterBase service, not to you.
2. Check the port. DbSchema prefills 3050, the traditional InterBase and Firebird port. Confirm it where the two products are installed on the same machine, since one of them will have been moved.
3. Load the InterClient driver. InterBase uses its own interbase.interclient.Driver. A Firebird driver will not connect to InterBase despite the shared history and the shared port.
4. Open port 3050 in the server's firewall. The database listens on port 3050 unless it was installed with a different one. A host firewall on the server blocks incoming connections on that port until a rule allows them. The firewall guide has the commands for Windows, ufw, firewalld and iptables.
5. Connect from DbSchema. In the Connection Dialog choose Remote computer or custom port, fill in the server host and the port, then press Test Connection to check that the server answers before you connect.
